It is hard for me to read stuff like this and not think that parts of American Christianity remain profoundly influenced by the theology of slavery bsky.app/profile/swor...
Today, NY Mag published an excerpt of my book, in which I talk about the past 50 years of the abusive evangelical "biblical parenting" movement, how "parental rights" entered the political lexicon, and why you shouldn't hit your kids: www.thecut.com/article/the-...
The Evangelical family’s twisted obsession with corporal punishment.
A bunch of us have been saying the SBC can't be redeemed. After public figures like Beth Moore got run out and in the latest executive committee shenanigans, they'll hang on to their <hears dixie> old hats.
There is a generation of children who have been intentionally physically and mentally abused in the name of G-d whose suffering is obscured by rightwing, sectarian politics.
Alt: There you have it.
It's also just good old fashioned Old Testament patriarchy, where everyone has to submit to the male elders, who are then supposedly upholding the authority of God. So you know, if they want to abuse kids emotionally, physically, or even sexually, somehow you can make that God's plan.
Theirs is a culture of domination and hierarchy. And it reinforces itself by allowing leaders to dominate their subordinates, as a reward for the dominance they themselves endure.
Neanderthals. Basket of deplorables was too kind.
is that even a controversial idea isn't there direct continuity between proslavery southern preachers and the modern-day southern baptist conference

Just like to stress that the concept of corporal punishment is in no way specific to slavery. There were European laws on the books that permitted heads of households to flog family and servants (all free) until the 20th century. Technically until 1920 in Sweden. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husaga_...
Their brief for corporal punishment is closely linked to their eagerness to inflict capital punishment. They want to kill people. It was easier when there were slaves.
