In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice. KURT VONNEGUT - born 101yrs ago today - was the only one to respond. His reply was just wonderful.

The prediction -> experimental design -> observation -> refinement loop is just that: a loop. There's no specific point that is intrinsically a better starting point than any other. Of course, when it becomes a tangled knot is when you know you're doing real science...
