The mindset has to switch from, “if I get this, I will vote” to “when I vote, I had better get this” because that’s the actual order of operations here. The voting is systemic; the results are process-based. Also, she is not the incumbent. The VP has no actual power except being a live body.

As a reader, I pretty much translate "insane" as "something big, but I can't be bothered to describe it more accurately (and my editor didn't counsel me on conscious language)." Yes, we all grew up saying it, and it's hard to change habits. I grew up saying the R-word, too, and I've learned better.
