While universities (like the University of Alberta) were delighted to get rid of their off-site Book and Record Depositories (literally, they called it BARD), the servers necessary for all the digitisation and access take more space and resources than those physical copies ever did.
And while, as a regulator, having one digital file was a lot easier to carry than loading multiple file boxes and hauling them to my desk (after signing the clearance and custody papers), I have no guarantee that things were organized correctly or are complete and I can't do anything about it now.
Harvard Law school’s library has a project where they digitized a *ton* of case law which involved chopping the books apart to get at the pages. They wrapped them all back up in plastic and stored them.
