I completely agree, but it’s a nonstarter politically. What is the concrete interest of the mainstream of the Democratic Party to reverse the “defunding and devaluation of humanities” when even the practitioners and universities don’t seem able or willing to defend themselves?

Exactly- that’s exactly my point. If this is going to be reversed, private foundations and capital will need to be involved.
