if you're gonna just sprinkle something on the ground and not do anything else, at least use sand or gravel or crushed lava rock. then at least there will be texture for shoes to grip where the sand/gravel/lava rocks pokes up out of the ice.
salt can help you clear ice, but you have to clear it, not just sprinkle it around and leave it there. Salt on top of ice can be beneficial, because it can melt it if there's enough, and you can clear it, or at the very least it can texture the ice so it isn' so slippery. for a while.
the snow will accumulate on top of the frozen water. Now you have an invisible death trap all the way down the sidewalk.
why is it dumb to put salt down before it snows a lot? I'm glad you ask. The salt raises the freezing point of water, however, when that salt is diluted by more water, the effectiveness of the salt dwindles. Once the salt is completely dissolved the water will once gain freeze.
this town... it puts salt on the walks before it even snows, which is dumb to begin with, but once there is literal ICE on all the walks, there's not a SPECK of salt down, anywhere. I just don't get how this happens.
