I'm quite surprised that the article gives life expectancy for normal cats at 11.7 years. That seems low. I'd believed it to be more around 16 years (cf dogs 14 years). My rescue cat who is probably between 11½ and 12 years old now and still climbing telegraph polls would no doubt be surprised.

There’s survivor bias by the time they get to that age though. By >10 their life expectancy is significantly higher than average simply because they haven’t succumbed to whatever else got the rest of their cohort yet.

I'm assuming this statistic is significantly lowered by outdoor cats, who have a much higher chance of catching a disease or getting injured.

the stats are from the UK where outdoor cats are the norm; i imagine that would skew things a bit
