I walked by a monument to COVID health care workers on the Hudson River a few weeks ago and realized, "wow, a million people died and nobody even stopped to mourn it." It was the first time I saw any monument to COVID deaths because we've politicized a million dead people. It's been 3+ years.

There are groups that have done memorials and mourning ceremonies. @markedbycovid.bsky.social has an AR memorial with photos and stories of those lost along with an annual day of mourning.
You have out into words what I struggle with at least once a month. We had so many people die and we never had closure. It just felt like the nation shrugged and moved on. I hate it. We need to acknowledge how hard this was.

I have zero faith that anyone has learned lessons from the Covid pandemic. So when the next one comes, it will roll out the exact same way. Because this country is effed up.
I'm not a fan of markers for the dead as they are expensive and serve no practical purpose. But it would be cool if potential monument $$ went to help covid vics.
I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this since 2021.
I also say “a million Americans died of covid” but it’s 1,145,958. Subtract a million and it’s STILL a huge number. Thanks, Jared!
