#OTD in 1666, the governors of St Bartholomew's Hospital met to discuss 'the Terrible and Unmercifull Fire' which had started the day before. The hospital archives were protected by the governors' order to remove the hospital records to Hornsey for safekeeping (no mention of patients though!)

We were at Homerton Hospital today to discuss a potential new acquisition. Although it's now part of a separate Trust, when it opened it had strong links to St Bartholomew's - reflected in the logo on this plaque of the old City and Hackney Health Authority, and the Bart's shield #NHS#history

On this day in 1948 the new National Health Service was launched. This issue of the Nursing Times described it as a 'comprehensive service made possible by the State for its citizens, not as a form of charity, but as their right.' Happy Birthday to the NHS! #nhs76

Photograph of the front page of the Nursing Times, 3 July 1948 titled 'Our Health Service', describing what the new NHS will offer and featuring a photograph of a nurse treating a patient and another of parents and their children.
