Have to say, the US system of neglecting those in need, is very much a basic human instinct. Total selfishness in a nutshell.
Maybe the media isn’t asking why, but the people involved in the fundraising *are* asking those questions. You can fight for change in more than one way. Also, doing nothing sucks. Do something helpful. Don’t denigrate those trying to help others.
Shame on the countries that don’t have a public health service, eternal shame!

Because charity helps to keep existing power-structures in place. It takes the pressure out of the system that otherwise might boil over. At least that's my theory about it...

True. Reminds me of a secret camera catching youngsters doing good turns for an old person, helping them across the road or something. Anyway, the clincher was when the producer then approached the inadvertent good young samaritans and handed them $200. I just thought that's SUCH a toxic influence.
