So I paid Google a lot of money for a long time for a plan that included unlimited storage. They then unilaterally ended that plan, but assured me my data would remain safe—just in read-only mode. Today they informed me I have seven days to move the entire archive offsite. It's 150 TB.
None of my business, but 150 TB of *WHAT*?!
Time to make some phone calls
"The cloud" is just a computer that belongs to someone else.
It’s really awful that someone who provides a unique and important service is getting screwed by both law enforcement and big tech. I wish I had more to offer than words of support.
It remains amazing that they very publicly told everyone their motto was 'don't be evil'
Everyone on the tech space have been screaming on this issue for months now. You should have seen this coming.
Not sure how your data is stored in Google, but might be a viable option to set up rclone in AWS instance and push your data through s3 endpoint
This is absolute ass
I wrote github.com/nelsonjchen/... for continuous backups but it could be used for evacuation. Unfortunately, the napkin math has this at about $25k round trip to move thru of Azure. But it'll be safe, if not out. I'm not sure if a Google Takeout can work this late but if it can, I can help.
I'm messaging old coworkers to see if anyone knows anyone useful. I mean, it doesn't help all the people who *don't* have a platform/audience to call this shitty stuff out, but maybe it'll help 1 person....
