It is also worth understanding how the Act fell short and why. We should strive to understand how racism and discrimination persisted, even as the Underground Railroad was a badge of honour for Canadians. Emancipation was not straightforward or easy. And it wasn't enough. It was still good.

The Act Against Slavery was the law that meant that enslaved people who made it into Upper Canada were freed. It set the stage for the Underground Railroad and the emancipation of all those who could make it here. It was unambiguously a step forward. It is unambiguously worth celebrating.

It also recognized slavery in the law, which hadn't been done before. On the one hand, this sucks. The worse alternative was that enslaved people had the same number of rights as inanimate property. HOWEVER

This was a deeply flawed law. While Lt Gov John Graves Simcoe aimed for abolition, the Legislative Assembly had enslavers who pushed against that and so Act did not free already-enslaved people in Canada, nor did it free the next generation born into slavery until their 25th birthday.
