Have you ever gotten up to go do something, walk into the next room, and totally forget what you were there to do? That's DOORWAY EFFECT, a well-studied phenomenon where crossing a boundary subconsciously shifts our focus from short-term memory to a state of alerted awareness.

A four-panel comic colored in red with a cartoony human rushing through a door, then saying "Wait, what was I doing?", then "Ha, doorway effect" and finally "you walk into a room and forget important tasks". Meanwhile in panel 4, it's revealed that a murderer with a knife is just out of frame in the other room.

I think do that now with new browser tabs. Have you ever opened a new tab and forgot what it was for?

Ah, I get it. So the guy walking through the door was going to make a sandwich for the little guy, right?

Yup! Knowing what it is, as soon as I realize I've forgotten what I was about to do, I walk back through the doorway and more easily remember what it was. 🙂

And here I thought it was because I'd just had an alien encounter . . .

When this happens, simply go back through the door and you will immediately remember what you were doing. It's just some kind of temporal distortion.
