Slow lorises are named from Dutch 'loeris' which means "clown". The 'slow' refers to a defensive strategy: slow movements make them hard to see & they freeze in place when threatened. They do have one trick 'up their sleeve' so to speak: they're venomous mammals, but the poison is in the armpits!

The oily secretions from the axillary gland (armpit) become a venom when mixed with the loris's saliva. The loris then spreads this venom on its fur as a noxious shield against predators. The venom is nearly identical to FELINE ALLERGEN, so the venom likely acts by anaphylaxis (allergic rxn).
