The loss of access to Twitter data under the new pricing plan was a dire blow to our research. Now being forced to delete the data that dozens of people spent years collecting, curating, and studying—outrageous. It’s like burning lab notebooks, an attack on science for the sake of pure malice.
SCOOP: After asking researchers to fork out $42,000 a month for API access Twitter is now saying those who don't pay have to delete any data they've already accessed - which one compares to "book burning" tip @techmeme.com https://inews.co.uk/news/twitter-researchers-delete-data-unless-pay-2364535
Move to hike price of academic access compared to 'book burning' amid fears it will harm fight against misinformation online
The AG's office is always looking for a good fight to fight 👀 Unless there were some absurd clauses in the original access agreement, I suspect many state universities will fight this
As far as I understand If you collected the data legally you don't have to delete it, and you can use it, no matter what Elmo says. It sucks that you won't be able to collect new data though ☹️
Oh this is fucking awful.
This makes me so angry I could scream
unless that’s in the pre-existing contract, i wouldn’t assume they can do that. definitely consult a lawyer.
don't do it, guarantee you there's no legal standing here, that's not the realm Elon operates in
Not a lawyer but it seems like a bluff. How will Twitter enforce that those who collected data have honestly deleted it? They need the lawyer power to actually enforce that. Plus wouldn’t there be contractual obligations to the former vs current TOS for api usage?
He truly is just an ill-adjusted child with far far too much power
Can they actually make you delete your own work that you put hours into creating? I understand that they aren't obligated to show you data, but trying to force you to "burn your own books" sounds like corporate overreach. Any lawyers around?
can they *make* you delete it?
