Just to be very clear, I'm appalled that authors' work - publicly funded, supported by universities and held in copyright by individuals - is continuing to be sold in this way. Thanks for clarifying the point on visibility.
I guess it's also to do with what's dominant in those datasets. So, if content out there online is often misogynist or racist, that gets reproduced. I can see that authoritative peer-reviewed material is what AI needs to be more reliable - but obviously this is not the ethical way to go about it.
