There was something the other day about them being in pretty bad shape as they weren't kept well, and my (limited) understanding is that very venomous ones are tricky to get someone to take as you legally need antivenin on hand at zoos and stuff, and it's expensive?

Unfortunately yes. :/ No facility would take them because of "unknown health and environmental concerns" since evidently the guy was not careful about how he took care of them.
