I was also raised on Radio 4 and have many opinions about it, some all-time favourites (mainly assorted plays), some things on there are on my "worst things humans have made" list (The Moral Maze, anything with Matthew Parris)
Musically it's fine, I just find him a bit annoying on a personal level.
There are plenty of tedious windbags out there who insist on this and we must never give in to them.
There's too much writing advice out there, most of it with the feel of those "...for Dummies" books. I'd much prefer people be left to develop their own, different writing styles, instead of presenting personal preferences as ironclad rules.
Like there's no radio for over-80s in the UK now except Angel Vintage, and that's a semi-amateur thing from the south coast.
Honestly believe 80% of the problem with radio in general is related to playlists, we need to put more trust in DJs and their producers, talent will only flourish when it's allowed to do different things.
