Honestly that ease of access is one of the things I love about the UK arrangement

It makes sense! Mum has very bad knees, so when my parents bought their home of the last 20 years, they really looked for one where everything essential was on one floor. Their laundry is in a mudroom (?) between the kitchen and backyard--at the opposite end from bedrooms, but no stairs in between.
