That’s amazing about your grandparents’ letters! I’ve never found anything so personal as hair, only photos, news articles, and samples of fabric for clothes. These are from a married couple I don’t know. They were from NJ, where I live, and he was a Marine who saw combat. Lovely stationery too.

Going back to the quote, I found that it's from The School-Master's Repository; or, Youth's Moral Preceptor by John Tapner in 1761. It was then used in other books too. Lines like the one quoted here were meant to be copied down in handwriting.
