A friend of mine who likewise helped run BigBad for years and who likewise dropped out described it as a sort of "bunker mentality" amongst leadership, a group of people in agreement on most things yet initially too busy digging into defensive positions to agree on a direction. /1

I have a huge amount of sympathy for coordinating a group mainly of volunteers; getting any group of people to come to consensus is hard enough in most circumstances, and a flat structure that wide seems nightmarish to me. /2
