one reason people don’t back down after being fact-checked on a post is that if they RT’d after having an emotional reaction, then those emotions are still activated, irrespective of facts. we can’t un-feel feelings! it takes a VERY HIGH level of emotional literacy to self-examine after new data

These two posts sum up the issue of misinformation in the age of social media and hyper-partisan politics pretty well. There comes a point when posting false content doesn't even matter, so long as it confirms your worldview and elicits the approval of your side.

This is also exactly how MAGA works at this point, people are so emotionally invested at this point little else matters.

I’ve had this happen to myself and one of my personal social media policies is now 1) if it’s not from a news source I recognize, I don’t RT it and 2) if it’s a war zone or violent situation, I wait a full 24-48 to let actual journalists and experts fact check before I chime in/share.

interesting that you mention emotion. Which reminds me of the reaction "WELL IT IS REAL TO ME!" when confronted with a counter narrative. There are also people who cannot fathom someone wasting time to deceive people without gaining anything

I feel like you’ve hit on at least part of the issue. I ‘be been caught out a few times reacting before I have all thee facts but so also back off when the truth is revealed. Although so am also cynical about year-jerker pics like that - much like the old glurge emails that used to make the rounds.
