This nonsense is circulating again, at least in the Other Place. 1. No, we didn't find city lights on alien planets 2. JWST studies of LHS 1140b couldn't even tell if it has an atmosphere 3. JWST hasn't observed Proxima b or Gliese 12b. Check the observing schedule: jwstfeed.com/Schedule/Sea... 🧪🔭

A widely viewed tweet spreading false claims that the JWST observatory found city lights on 6 alien planets.

That’s exactly what Big Lemurian wants us to believe!

Look, I would *love* to see credible evidence of civilizations on other planets. But making up stories just spreads confusion and cynicism. Here are the actual JWST findings about planet LHS 1140b. Getting answers is hard work. news.umich.edu/astronomers-... 🧪🔭

Light curves for the planet LHS 1140 b during two passes in front of its star in December, 2023.

I've just discovered (pun not intended) I'm blocked by that account on Twitter. I wonder why😉

Just to ask, how do you know it's not alien lights on another planet I'm joking 😂, but I love JWST I love to think about what it can see and maybe figure out what atmospheres are on other planets

It looks like the Pride movement is alive and well there though! But seriously, I thought detecting an exo-planet was impressive. Just how impressive would it be to be able to detect city lights on an exo-planet? That would be a phenomenal telescope.

A curious question: Would it be technically possible to detect city lights on other planets? NIRCam, NIRISS and NIRSpec cover only a small part of the visible light spectrum at all.
