It was never for any other reason. The whole reason birthright citizenship exists is to overrule Dred Scott v. Sanford. Conservatives want Dred Scott restored and always have done.

And “white” is a flexible category, a lot of people who are white now would not have been considered white at one point, & would not be considered white if the definitions shifted again! People don’t seem to understand that there is no end stage to bigotry, there’s always an out group.

I believe this also applies to Vance’s wife. I haven’t been able to verify it, but based on the timeline I’m pretty sure her parents weren’t US citizens at the time of her birth.
