most every election i can recall has involved the gop candidates telling the public that they had some reasonable moderate views they don’t, winking at their radical supporters (who understand this game), and the media praising them for “moderating” despite knowing perfectly well they don’t mean it.

Every other rich democracy has figured out how not to let politicians flagrantly lie & actually have to answer real policy questions. It's not hard. The unwillingness to do it makes you wonder why there seems to be no baseline level of professional pride below which 🇺🇸 journalists refuse to go.
