There are only 4 real mitigations available: clean air, vaccinations, proper masks, nasal sprays. Conference organizers can't do much about 2-4 (that's on us), but they could do much better at promoting 1. That means HEPA filtration, meals and meetings in outdoor spaces, open windows, etc.

I heard of a few social events in crowded spaces and am glad the one I played some role in choosing was outdoors. But it took me, an immunocompromised person, reminding another person that being outdoors and chancing rain is better than everyone getting Covid, esp immunocompromised folks.

I do wonder about small nudges like, for instance, having masks available in conference spaces, signage, etc. (not sure if this would make any difference and/or what else organizers might do, but it did feel like COVID was completely unacknowledged at APSA)
