Imma keep it short this time: Companies are using our work without compensation. That's the point of AI The endless debates over whether this is "true art" or not, or whether it's gonna take over the world some day, are a distraction from the indisputable fact that this is pure exploitation

Meta’s new AI image generator was trained on 1.1 billion Instagram and Facebook photos

"Imagine with Meta AI" turns prompts into images, trained using public Facebook data.

Isn't exactly that part of Meta's TOS? Sure, they probably used more and other sources than their own servers, but if you upload your art to FB and IG, don't you agree to them using it?

Anything “created” via an algorithmic AI is not art in any sense. Art, created by a person (even if derivative), includes new thought. AI cannot do so. A “painting in the style of Kincaid of Samwise and Gandalf fucking” doesn’t include that new thought.

I'm quite sure that Facebook and Instagram users gave Meta permission to use their pictures to train its AI. Now the toothpaste is out of the tube. 🤷‍♂️

I wonder if in time we will come to value less artful images because we recognize their humanity.

Insult to injury is this is happening while Instagram has stopped promoting artists in their algorithm. It’s become a hostile platform to the arts just a few years after positioning itself as the best post-Tumblr alternative

the corporate dream of "an end to art"; all the crayons they need are already in the box, and anything they want to sell can be assembled from the colors

They are also exploiting the likenesses of everyone, artists or not, who are using their apps -- without permission or compensation. This includes the dead whose accounts are still up and literally CANNOT give person -- and children, who we have very specific laws protecting from exploitation.

My big hope is that the astronomical costs of AI always vastly outweigh any potential income it could generate, and the people making/funding it bail. The only problem is Meta could eat a ten billion dollar loss on a Wii graphics Metaverse, there’s just so much money they can waste.

Iain Rankin is a successful Scottish novel writer & he recently discovered his books were being used to teach AI. Pure plagiarism with no request for permission.

I mean, it's not THE POINT of AI. It's a consequence of their firehose training methodology. Personally, I think they're doing it wrong. Focus on fundamental skills, like depth perception, and work up instead of "Here's a billion hours or people driving. Learn to drive."
