There could be lessons to be learnt from the strengthening of governance and accountability (and their regulation) in large financial firms since the global financial crisis. A key component of which is much greater clarity on individual roles and responsibilities.

This is outstanding. Thank you, David, it says everything I've been thinking without being able to articulate. The lobby system of journalism infuriates me, because of the cosiness between the politicians and journalists. Those journalists are basically like Rick Sky was with pop stars.
In the real world accountability within a job role is about delivering results, taking ownership and delivering measurable outcomes, on time. That basic seems missed entirely in politics.
