This is fascinating and 404 has been amazing on this beat, but I keep coming back to is the question of why. You can make money putting Shrimp Jesii on Facebook. Why would a person use AI to generate fake shit for Wikipedia? It's not even a scam, you can't make money off it. It's just vandalism.
1: AI is hallucinating events, historical figures, entire concepts on Wikipedia 2: a task force of Wikipedia editors is detecting and deleting this stuff www.404media.co/the-editors-...
WikiProject AI Cleanup is protecting Wikipedia from the same kind of misleading AI-generated information that has plagued the rest of the internet.
Totally spitballing… 1) Enter a PhD program. 2) Use an LLM to write Wikipedia articles. 3) Use reverted edits as a measure of quality. 4) Publish a paper titled "LLM's as Wikipedia Authors, an Empirical Study." 5) Don't profit.
Disinformation campaigns.
vandalism is a good word for it
"Some people just want to watch the world burn, Harry" --Hodor
The same people who want to be super editors on Wikipedia for no money. They think this is a short cut to getting enhanced status by doing a lot of edits.
A reliable base of factual information accessible to all is not convenient for power. Draw your own conclusions.
I assume it's part of the campaign to rub shit over everything and encourage people to disengage.
This is the definition of disinformation. Spew so much crap into the ecosystem that literally everything becomes untrustworthy.
Jesii > Jesata > JesusesJesii > Jesata > Jesuses
Eroding our abilities to fact check anything quickly is absolutely the goal
