Bosses getting stuck on stuff is more rule than exception it seems.
You know, as much as I love dmc3 and beyond I never actually played 1, so I'm doing that now. It's kinda wild how it will take any room with any amount of clutter and elevation and say "boss room!". I'm not opposed, but I can understand why they stopped doing it.

I personally come down on it being more like Rondo of Blood than SotN. I guess it doesn't matter that much, genre being as fluid as it is, but to me it lacks character progression that interacts with the world. I'd more readily accept Sekiro as one.
