Yup, that's a perfect description of the advice I was given. My post-PhD life has been trying to recover from that, but having a terrible visiting position at a place where the admin was terrible to visitors (a fact I found out after) and the pandemic happen during my time there was a big setback :(

The advice I got when burning out in my 4th year was basically "you've already come this far, it'd be a shame to stop now". I did finish, but I did NOT leave grad school with good mental health... I wish self care was emphasized to me, instead it was just dig in and push through.

How did it increase from completely useless?

I also had a laparoscopic surgery to remove mine and can attest to the first few days being pretty sore in my torso, especially the top part near the shoulders, for whatever reason. But within a week, I was pretty much moving around as normal.
