I had the extraordinary joy of attending one way back when I was in college. Couldn't have imagined how much elation could fit into one room. Whooping and shouting, backslaps and a ton of tears. Made me so freaking proud to be an American.

I went to NYC in July for about the 100th time but for the first time I went to Liberty and Ellis Island. My fellow visitors wore patriotic themed shirts, hats, hoodies, those goofy statue of liberty head bands and were awestruck by tribute to America's greatness. They were also mostly immigrants.

I was lucky enough to go to my grandmother’s citizenship ceremony as a youngish child. She was a WWII war bride who immigrated to the States with her husband and child. I won’t ever forget how excited all of the new citizens were as they were granted their citizenships.
