I get that's the traditional way, I just feel we have much better means of sharing the science now - FAIR data, runable and forkable protocols, micropublications describing postpub impact. The journal format worked for print, but is really the best we can do?

Maybe, ideally. But we're a very long way from this being remotely standard in my discipline at least. Maybe in 10-20 years. When that happens, I will happily concede that we are past needing the journal article.
