Ever wonder why Street Fighter has a character named Sodom who, despite that name, has no connection to anything biblical or sexual? I wrote up the whole story + how that name makes sense with the fact that he speaks very bad Japanese. www.thrillingtalesofoldvideogames.com/blog/street-...
And is this the best name for a guy who’s most prominent trait is liking Japanese culture?
This was a great read. I always assumed it was another example of Japanese games using Christian language and iconography for easy depth. This is a much more satisfying investigation.
Really interesting stuff here! I never realized so much thought went into a character I mostly ignored.
I... think I remember you from the other site. Welcome aboard! Get your fill of microblogging goodness before right wing turds rush in to ruin it.
I’ve waited 30 years for this
What a great read! This is super interesting, and would make a lot of sense given how many Japanese games were pulling from pop culture outside the region (like all the Alien references in Metroid).
Thanks for this, I never connected the dots on band names being so heavy in Final Fight and this is a pretty comprehensive document on Sodom being pretty bad at communicating. As for Eagle: I don't have the source on hand but he is specifically intended to be Freddie Mercury for his CVS2 iteration
Love just how comprehensive this was in service of such a minor subject (also one I love). Great job!
Great article. I'm just upset his clothing shop isn't called Kiss A Guy.
“IT’S TOE SHOW!” - well, there's a ready-made win quote against Juri if he comes back for SF6
This was a good read. Sodom is exactly the kind of goofy junior otaku I used to be as a teenager, and Capcom leaning into that characterization is why I want him to be playable again so much. ...also having one of my A3 mains back would just be nice, y'know?
