I don't have it close to hand, but remember, the other authorized translations were the RSV and the AV. The BCP predates the NRSV (and I don't think a bunch of others were approved until the 80s)
The phrasing of the RSV might have made it hard to convey the wedding related point that they wanted from the NEB.
