No-one ever talks about how a major revival of monastic life would relieve the housing crisis, not to mention the reduction in emissions as fewer people would need to travel to work
I often chat to a Capuchin Franciscan friar and he tells me that in their tradition they consider themselves homeless and have to move monasteries every few years which to be honest doesn't sound all that much of an improvement on the current rental sector.
There was a convent not far from me in a very expensive / high density area that got turned into SFHs a couple years ago. Devastating on so many levels.

There was a chap, Joseph Lyne, who tried to set up an Anglican monastery in Norwich in 1863. Called himself Father Ignatius. He was violently ejected from the city in 1866. He went on to build Llanthony Abbey, which later became a home for Eric Gill (shudder...)
