Today, the UK becomes the first G7 country to phase out coal power Since opening world's 1st coal plant in 1882, UK coal fleet burned through 4.6bn tonnes of coal, emitting 10.4GtCO2 – more than most countries have ever released Here's how it all ended: interactive.carbonbrief.org/coal-phaseou...
Four US states that have phased out coal: New York, Washington, and Hawaii. These four states have about the same GDP as the UK (a little more in fact).
Whilst I do really welcome this, I guess it is the end of an era. Undoubtedly it had lots of negative aspects, but it was incredibly important to the lives of many people, coal mining and the Industrial Revolution were crucial to this country. That was a lot of CO2 released though!
Well done to them. Something poetic about the first country to lead the world into the coal age, being the first country to get out of it.
“World-beating” at both extremes.
With how much i see people crying about heating and power costs in the UK they might want to reopen some of those mines/plants....
Is it possible to add a line for the price of coal? I'm wondering how much is regulation vs markets
