They embolden their base to become more rabid and overt in extreme positions - a widening of the Overton Window. They also legitimise misinformation.
Really interesting Margaret. It’s interesting to note that commentators like Bolt often get over 200,000, even 400,000 views on YouTube. Their influence isn’t just confined to mainstream platforms anymore.

Under Lachlan Murdoch, News Corp won’t even pretend to be a news organisation anymore. They’re a political party, hellbent on division, waging hard-right political war on Australian, UK and US society. I’m so tired of this being normalised as acceptable by rest of media.
Still amazes me this isn't just the default position amongst the media, and not just about Trump. You can't just platform these lying authoritarianism and then "fact check" after they have spewed their poison.
I don’t think interviewing Trump is always a bad idea. But treating him as anything other than a depraved authoritarian helps his cause by legitimizing him as a reasonable choice for voters. You can't go in hoping to get along. And that's what Welker did.
