I’ve seen people in the past assume the “oh shit get in the bunker the Waffle House closed” thing is a joke so I need to stress that it almost entirely is not

Oh MAN. This is incredibly serious. Waffle House does *not* do this unless the weather threat is literally catastrophic.

All Waffle Houses in the immediate area are closed effective Thursday, a representative for the chain said.

I don't live anywhere near a Waffle House (the closest one is two states away) but I now judge storm severity news by when this starts going around.

Also, Jim Cantore arrived in Tallahassee yesterday. I'm not sure what the next Horseman of the Apocalypse is, but they're up to two.

Definitely not a joke. The Waffle House index is real. I’m reminded though, and this is hopefully unrelated, that their long time CEO (who apparently was a real mensch) recently passed away. Not sure if his passing impacts their policies this time around. Still - assume it’s serious!

I thought it was if they didn't reopen after like 24 to 48 hours.

The waffle house index is a real thing. i mean, yes, it is a joke, but at the same time it *does* correlate with the severity of storms.

We only joke about it because of how serious it is. It almost never happens.

I'm in England and even *I* know it's bad if Waffle Houses are closing.
