I may be almost 40, but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes miss snuggling in my jammies and having someone read me a story before bed.

Feel like making sand art as a kid directly translated to making my own spice mixes as an adult. ๐Ÿ˜‚ (This is a taco mix.)

. . . of us to swallow . . . especially writers. But if we give up after one failureโ€”or worse, never begin because of the fear of failureโ€”weโ€™re missing out on how much better the next iteration could be.

In a recent podcast episode, Gabriela Pereira, author and founder of DIY MFA, discussed why itโ€™s important for writers to embrace iteration and even failure, featuring the words of the great philosophers of . . . Yoda and Samuel Beckett. ๐Ÿค” Accepting failure is a hard pill for most . . .

โ€œIf we want to create work that has meaning โ€” work that moves people โ€” there is no room for half-baked effortโ€ฆ. Either we do the work, or we do not. At the same time, we have to accept that we may try something and have it fail miserably, and that's just part of the process. We must be willing to fail and try again.โ€ DIY MFA Radio podcast, โ€œEpisode 478: Lesson 3 โ€“ Embrace the Power of Iterationโ€

Happy Monday, all! My big goals for the week are to wrap up a couple of sample edits, provide feedback to an individual workshopping client, and then start looking at whether or not I want to offer some virtual co-writing spaces and writing groups again. What are you hoping to achieve this week?

I share most things from my personal life on my personal accounts, but I visited my hometown fair today for what may have been the last time. And here's a mini photo dump, including a Penelope cake and three little pigs who made the right housing choice.

Cake decorated to look like an orange cat
Pig exhibit with houses made to look like they're from the three Little pigs, but the three actual pigs are all in the brick house
Clipping from an old newspaper about a bowl named peekaboo butter boy
Giant pumpkin carved with a scary face

Right? I kept thinking I was misread something, but I think their genuine take is to shove others down so I can step up. Big authors should talk out about this because it helps the little authors who don't have the platform to do so. We should be lifting each other up. I don't understand this.

Am I misreading something here? What is this?

Comment: I should add, as independently published authors, there are some emotions entangled with these views. It's a bit frustrating to hear a best-selling author, with world-wide and successful distribution complain about some libraries not carrying their book. Indie authors can struggle to get anyone to purchase their book. And then there is Stephen King posting expletives on X because Florida removed some of his titles from schools. Indie authors are thankful for every single sale or KDP page read. It's hard not to feel like the authors on the "banned book" list believe they are entitled to sales.

Me: I'm sorry, l'm trying
to understand. Your stance is that banned authors don't deserve to be angry about their books being banned, which impedes our first amendment rights, because you struggle with sales? Am I taking that incorrectly?
