The only change I'd make is to remove the sport from summer months. It's still a winter sport and expecting anyone to run 10+KMs in heat and not drop skill level is insane.
Yeah it is insane really to be playing now. Not sure how it would work but the AFL need to starting treating it more seriously rather than paying lip service to the women's game.
