In some situations, as many of us are! The one time I saw her in person was actually at a really crowded literary event in Dunedin/Ōtepoti, where she was having a whale of a time, laughing and chatting and watching on with family and friends.

Geography is largely to blame there, I’d say. (I feel the same about your dad, in fact. I met him only a few times, and in London, but enjoyed each encounter a lot.)

One of my grandfathers used to swear he'd had his appendix taken out on the kitchen table with a bread knife. Perhaps we'll also need to follow his example and provide our own surgical instruments.
