One more phylum capable of methanogenesis coming soon! Culture and all :) Hoping to submit later this year.

Three papers showing methanogenesis by three members of the Thermoproteota (TACK) are out in Nature today: tinyurl.com/4v4fkda6tinyurl.com/yr4p7js6tinyurl.com/mtsrj6b9 (figure by @Kohtzarchaeota who 1st authored both papers from my lab; 1 shared with Viola Krukenberg)

Sorry for late reply.

The problem is that our main site has at least 8 different species in it and some are closely related. We are worked on identifying a site that has one dominant MMB strain to get a better genome from it. That said, I doubt we will be able to close it unless we have one in culture.

I am not counting on having them soon. The genomes are really big, ca. 10Mb+ I think what we have is as good as it gets from single consortia meta genomes. We have attempted shotgun metagenomics from magnetic pellets but got similar results because of the high taxonomic diversity of MMB in sample.

Missing above: In the past decade metagenomics revealed the genetic potential for methanogenesis in several phyla level lineages outside the Euryarchaeota, including members of the Bathyarchaeota, Verstraetearchaeota/Methanomethylicia, Korarchaeota, Helarchaeota (in Asgard), & Nezhaarchaeota.

The next 4 years of funding for our Methanomethylicia research are secured – more on that soon! We are always looking for enthusiastic grad students and postdocs to join our lab. Email me a CV & a 1-2 pages motivation/research letter (I will not answer DMs) www.environmental-microbiology.com

Wanna remind yourself or others of the role microbes play in methane cycling? Check out the infographic Mark Belan and I just made. Available in English tinyurl.com/5jwhuurstinyurl.com/y64j5z3ttinyurl.com/3ddxxa2n
