If you meet someone who's into 40k, there are two important questions you must ask: 1. Is 40k a satire? 2. Is there a "good guy" faction in 40k? If they say it's not a satire, or they tell you the Empire are the good guys, run like hell.

The closest I can find to "good guys" in 40k are the Farsight Enclaves of Tau separatists, and they are pretty obscure as a faction.
