The scheme continued with minor changes for 48 years until reforms in the 80s and in 1993 the Earthquake and War Damage Commission was renamed Earthquake Commission.

31 years later, 79 years since the scheme began, Toka Tū Ake – Natural Hazards Commission says their new name "better reflects the range of natural hazards we provide cover for, including tsunami, landslides, volcanic activity, earthquakes and geothermal activity."
