It's fascinating how the dismantling of a genuine mass media and the recreation of premodern purely person-to-person information networks via social media has transformed Americans back into medieval villagers in the span of about a decade.

it wasn't just right-wing media outlets that were pushing the CRIME WAVE narrative. it was everywhere, framed as a "top concern of voters" or whatever

I still vote for Van Jones’ reaction after first address to Congress as the absolute 100/100 on this scale

i wrote about this for my column on tuesday but i think we ought to think of policies restricting gender affirming care as explicitly aimed at expelling a disfavored population from the state in question www.nytimes.com/2024/07/11/b...

For L.G.B.T.Q. People, Moving to Friendlier States Comes With a Cost

Laws targeting gender-affirming care have uprooted thousands. But places that are more supportive can also be more expensive.

A stunning statement from the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters. “We have lost confidence in our president and administration, and we pledge to fight to reclaim our university.” drive.google.com/file/d/1rciM...

Joint Statement by the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters
April 19, 2024
The American Association of University Professors has defined two central pillars of higher education in America: academic freedom and shared governance: the freedom to teach and do research without interference from entities external to the profession; and the "inescapable interdependence among governing board, administration, faculty, students." In the last three days, Columbia University President Shafik and her administration have seriously violated both.
We are shocked at her failure to mount any defense of the free inquiry central to the educational mission of a university in a democratic society and at her willingness to appease legislators seeking to interfere in university affairs. She has demonstrated flagrant disregard of shared governance in her acceptance of partisan charges that anti-war demonstrators are violent and antisemitic and in her unilateral and wild

reading this jennifer burns profile of milton friedman and the entire section on the civil rights act is infuriating. friedman comes across as smug, blinkered and willfully ignorant of the actual state of the jim crowd south, to say nothing of its history. here, he is speaking out against the act

Goldwater, and Friedman alongside him, viewed the proposed law with suspicion. It would have been relatively easy for Friedman to avoid commenting on the topic. Instead, as the campaign progressed, Friedman became increasingly vocal. In an appearance before Harvard students, Friedman launched into a long diatribe against the Civil Rights Act. "The majority in this country are prejudiced and it is naïve —no, it's undemocratic,— to suppose you're going to get people to vote against themselves," he argued. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, he veered off topic to explain and defend Goldwater's position.
"Sen. Goldwater believes improvement in the lot of the Negro depends primarily on freedom of economic opportunity and on changing att-tudes on the part of individuals," he explained, presenting Goldwateris views as equivalent to his. "He believes that laws by the federal government cannot effectively improve the Negro's position…”

Really seems like defending Trump is, in fact, not the last thing he wants to do
