Never forget the people of Benin are made to feel unwelcome in the same country that insists the Benin Bronzes belong there. British colonialism is a "relic of the past" and leaves the UK with no responsibilities... except when it is beneficial and suits the British. Much like during colonialism.
(And to be clear, the modern country of Benin and the Kingdom of Benin refer to different areas with a related but differing colonial past. In this case, the "People of Benin" being referenced are the Nigerians who are the descendants of the Kingdom of Benin.)
I would argue British colonialism is very much a "relic of the present". It remains largely unresolved and ignored (except when it suits Britain, as you said). Britain has not yet had its reckoning....i reckon.
