There is an awful lot to say about this, and given Robert Jenrick is likely to be leader I imagine I will end up saying it an awful lot, but among other things: most people in council housing who were 'born abroad' weren't. They were born in what were then British colonies!

That fake stat has come directly from Goodwin’s substack. I know because I did several threads debunking it. Shows how his toxic influence is shaping Tory thinking.

You can see this just by thinking intelligently for a minute looking at the age and ethnicity profile, like, hmm, I wonder where these 60s or older ethnic minorities came from and under what terms (answer: their free movement through the British empire!)

The main thing worth pointing out is that the proportion of Londoners in social housing who were born aboard is pretty much identical to the proportion of all Londoners born aboard. It's an international city.

The practical choices available today, stem from the fact they are here now, so options are (a) housing; or (b) the Trump route of mass expulsions; or (c) we can have an uncivil society with mass homelessness. I'd prefer (a); does Jenrick want (b) or (c) or (d) ineffectual whining & doing nothing?

He didn't seem to mind Boris Johnson getting a tax payer funded house.

Maybe it’s just an attack on (US born) Boris Johnson /s

Aside from the overt racism inherent in Jenrick's position, it also perfectly illustrates the poor (non-existent) level of education about Empire, and especially the end of Empire, in British schools

If Jenrick becomes Tory leader the he will be fighting with Farage for a minority, very right wing, vote. There has always been 20-25% of voters who see themselves as very patriotic by objecting to foreign ideas and people. Let these two compete and allow the moderate majority to flourish!

Are they actually British citizens rather than just Commonwealth citizens who moved to the UK but never went thru the process of naturalisation.

I mean, the Windrush scandal only happened 6yrs ago. The scandal taught/reminded the public about how these people came to be in the UK and their equal right to Britishness. The man was in the Home Office in recent yrs, how is he so ignorant of this??
