This is rather interesting. From an article on @samfr.bsky.social’s blog by Sam Friedman about his new book (“Born to Rule: The Making and Remaking of the British Elite”) written with Aaron Reeves.

y. To look at this issue we moved to a setting where elites make very important decisions; the British Supreme Court. Here we examined whether the class backgrounds of judges who have made decisions on the 467 cases heard by the Supreme Court, since it was established, affect the likelihood of reaching a “left-outcome” – i.e. a decisions which favour economic underdogs such as employees in disputes with employers. Notably, the presence of at least one judge who grew up in a family in the top 1% significantly reduces the proportion of decisions that reach a left outcome. The origins of elites don’t just influence their political ideology but they can also impact what they actually do when they have power.

Not sure if labour law or employees is the best example. In many jurisdictions it is acknowledged that the employee is the less powerful part (compared to the employer) and therefore needs to be protected at bit more. Will read the article anyway Thanks for highlighting!

I'm wondering how many UKSC decisions there can have been where at least one member of the panel didn't come from a background of the UK top 1%. There have only been about 35 justices so far.

Some obvious questions about methodology. But may interest eg @dinahrose.bsky.social.
