What's so striking about the tampon discourse is that it triangulates two sites of social anxiety and shame: the toilet and menstruation. Tapping into these feelings and the sense that social boundaries are being eroded has long been a winning conservative strategy.
Numerous scholars have shown that bathrooms are sites of social division and mediation. But for conservatives especially, the bathroom has been metonymous for social segregation. You could say that their anxieties about social mixing has been worked out in the toilet.
